Zaha Hadid Architects' mathematics gallery opens at London Science Museum
7 DECEMBER 2016       DEZEEN       JESSICA MAIRS
Zaha Hadid Architects has completed the new mathematics gallery for London's Science Museum, which is modelled on a wind tunnel for a 1920s plane.

The Mathematics: The Winton Gallery at the Science Museum in South Kensington is the first UK project by Zaha Hadid Architects to open its doors since the firm's figurehead died earlier this year.

The gallery was created to host over 100 objects from the museum's science, technology, engineering and mathematics collections. These objects show how mathematics impacts the world, from trade to travel and architectural form.

Suspended from the ceiling is a 1929 Handley Page Gugnunc aircraft – the inspiration for the gallery's design.

Huge three-dimensional curls form a canopy over the space, based on the air flows that would have surrounded the aircraft in flight. The translucent, undulating forms are illuminated by violet light.

The Gugnunc's wing design was influenced by pioneering aerodynamic research, and is used in the gallery to illustrate how mathematics can be used to solve practical issues.

"Conceived as a wind tunnel for the largest object in the gallery – a Handley Page aircraft from 1929  – the space follows the lines of airflow around it in a stunning display of imagined aerodynamics," said a statement from ZHA.

"Inspired by the Handley Page aircraft, the design is driven by equations of airflow used in the aviation industry."

Zaha Hadid – who ranked number one in the Dezeen Hot List – studied mathematics at the American University of Beirut prior to launching her architecture career. Read More

Maebashi, other cities tap My Number system to offer maternal, child health info
1 DECEMBER 2016       JAPAN TIMES
(Jiji) -- Several municipalities have launched a service that offers easy online access to information on maternal and child health through the cards of a 12-digit identification system, dubbed My Number.

The Maebashi Municipal Government in Gunma Prefecture launched the service in March ahead of other municipalities, enabling mothers to read the digitized health records of their children and other information written in boshi techo, a mother and child health handbook, through their computers or smartphones.

To apply to use the service, a mother simply needs to visit a dedicated website and identify herself using the electronic certificate contained in an integrated circuit chip embedded on the back of her My Number card. Read More

Quest for artificial intelligence highlights lack of critical thinking skills in humans
1 DECEMBER 2016       JAPAN TIMES       SHUSUKE MURAI
Thanks to the relentless work of dedicated engineers, artificial intelligence, or AI, becomes smarter by the day.

But while computers become better at replicating human tasks, reading comprehension, an area where machines have yet to catch up, is declining among young people, suggesting a chilling future in which AI may put people out of work.

That is why Noriko Arai, a mathematician at the National Institute of Informatics, decided in November to change the direction of her project from teaching an AI to pass the entrance exam for Japan’s most prestigious school — the University of Tokyo, better known as Todai — to focusing on improving the reading comprehension of future generations using AI technology.

“AI engineers have always said that humans don’t have to worry because only menial jobs will be taken over by machines. But what about the people who do such jobs?” Arai, the project’s director, said in a recent interview. “Does AI create new jobs? Sure. But the real question is, how many of those who may lose their jobs to AI will be able to land a new one that requires high creativity?” Read More

AppNexus bans Breitbart from ad exchange, citing hate speech
24 November 2016       Japan Times
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (Reuters) – Breitbart News, the outlet once led by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s chief strategist, has been blocked by one of the largest advertising exchanges serving digital publishers due to hate speech.

AppNexus deactivated Breitbart News after an audit of the site’s content determined that it violates the advertising exchange’s code of conduct banning hate speech, spokesman Joshua Zeitz said on Tuesday.

Breitbart CEO Larry Solov said the company “always and continues to condemn racism and bigotry in any form,” in an email statement. Read More

No hallucinogens found in system of Florida man who killed couple, chewed on corpse’s face
24 November 2016       Japan Times
STUART, FL (AP) – The Florida college student accused of randomly killing a couple and chewing on the dead man’s face had no detectable hallucinogenic drugs in his system, according an FBI toxicology report released Wednesday.

Austin Harrouff had a trace amount of marijuana in his system when he allegedly beat and stabbed John Stevens, 59, and his 53-year-old wife, Michelle Mishcon, outside their Tequesta-area home Aug. 15, according to the report.

Martin County Sheriff William Snyder had previously speculated that Harrouff may have been on flakka or bath salts, but those drugs weren’t detected.

Harrouff, 19, was hospitalized for two months after the killings for a burned esophagus, possibly from ingesting chemicals found in the couple’s garage.

Nellie King, Harrouff’s attorney, said Wednesday that her client is mentally ill.

“The judicial process will bear all of this out in due time,” King said in a statement.

Prosecutors declined comment. Read More

Live-Action Ghost in the Shell Film Unveils 1st Full 2-Minute Trailer
Star Scarlett Johansson introduces video in Tokyo event.
14 November 2016       RocketNews24       Anime News Network
The first full two-minute trailer for the live-action Ghost in the Shell film debuted at a Tokyo event on Sunday, and Paramount Pictures is streaming it online. The video begins with an introduction by the film’s lead actress Scarlett Johansson.

Entertainment Tonight previously streamed a video on Tuesday showing an interview with Johansson, as well as behind-the-scenes footage of a gunfight scene. Paramount also posted a behind-the-scenes video feature on Thursday.

Dreamworks and Paramount are co-financing and co-producing the film. Paramount Pictures is the film’s new distributor, after Dreamworks ended its distribution deal with Walt Disney Pictures. The film is currently slated for release on March 31, 2017. Principal photography began in Wellington, New Zealand in January.

In addition to Johansson, Pilou Asbæk (Lucy) will play Batou. Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire) will play the Laughing Man. Director, comedian, and actor Beat Takeshi (also known as Takeshi Kitano) plays the Public Security Section 9 founder and chief Daisuke Aramaki.

French actress Juliette Binoche (2014’s Godzilla, The English Patient, Chocolat) will play Dr. Ouelet, and Kaori Momoi (Sukiyaki Western Django, Memoirs of a Geisha, Helter Skelter) and Rila Fukushima (The Wolverine) will also have roles in the film. The actors for the other Section 9 task force members include: Chin Han (Independence Day: Resurgence), Danusia Samal (Tyrant), Lasarus Ratuere (Terra Nova), Yutaka Izumihara (Unbroken), and Tuwanda Manyimo (The Rover).

Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) signed on to direct the film. Jonathan Herman (Straight Outta Compton) reworked the earlier drafts of the script written by William Wheeler (Hoax, The Reluctant Fundamentalist) and Jamie Moss (Street Kings). Weta Workshop and its co-founder Richard Taylor are working on the film. Deadline reported last year that Johansson was offered US$10 million for the lead role.

Additional staff members include cinematographer Jess Hall (The Spectacular Now, editor Neil Smith (Snow White and the Huntsman), production designer Jan Roelfs (Fast & Furious 6), and costume designers Kurt Swanson and Bart Mueller (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay).

The anime studio Production I.G pitched the rights for Masamune Shirow‘s original cyber-police manga on behalf of the manga’s publisher Kodansha in 2007, and Dreamworks acquired the live-action film rights in 2008. Ari Arad (Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance), Avi Arad (formerly of Marvel Studios as well as of the Spider-Man and X-Men movie franchises), and Seaside Entertainment‘s Steven Paul (Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance), and Mark Sourian (The Ring Two) are producing. The executive producers include Michael Costigan (Prometheus), Jeffrey Silver (Edge of Tomorrow, 300), Tetsu Fujimura (Tekken), and Production I.G founder and head Mitsuhisa Ishikawa. Read More
